Triphala And Benefits Of Triphala Herb

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Dr John Anne General Description Triphala literally means three fruits (tri = three, phala = fruits). It is a mixture composed of the three essential myrobalans. They are:- (i) Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) (ii) Bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica) (iii) Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) Properties The properties of the Triphala are dependent on the properties of its individual herbs. Let us see what these properties are:- (i) Amalaki, i.e. the Indian gooseberry, is the richest source of vitamin C in the world. It is a light green fruit with a sour taste due to its acidic content. The fruit is cooling and refreshing. It also has laxative and purgative properties. Since it has good amount of vitamin C, amalaki hastens blood clotting and heals wounds. In some cases, amalaki has been used to renew lost sexual vigor in men and women with success. (ii) Bibhitaki is a bitter herb, also popularly known as behra. Like amalaki, it also has beneficial effects in healing of wounds. It is a tonic and a laxative. It can reduce fevers, and hence it is an antipyretic. (iii) Haritaki is one of the mildest and safest laxatives used in Ayurvedic medicine. It prevents blood clotting. Haritaki is a stomachic; it improves the functioning of the stomach and facilitates digestion. Haritaki is used to improve all nutritional imbalances in the system, and looks after the entire digestive, absorptive, assimilative and excretory process. Hence, Triphala which is made up of these three valuable components is a real boon to Ayurveda. Recently, the potential of Triphala in stopping the growth of cancerous cells in the body is being studied in greater detail. The following are the general properties of Triphala:- (i) Triphala has anti-inflammatory properties. (ii) Triphala regulates the functioning of the cardiovascular system and the liver. (iii) Triphala has excellent effect on the digestive system. It has laxative properties. (iv) Triphala can reduce the cholesterol that is accumulated in the blood. (v) Triphala is an expectorant. (vi) Triphala fastens the healing process, because it has collagen, an important cementing material required in the process of blood clotting. Uses Triphala is vastly considered as one of the most important medicines Ayurveda has ever provided to the world. The following are the uses for which Triphala is today internationally acclaimed:- (i) Digestive Problems All the three constituents of the Triphala have laxative properties. Triphala can stimulate the mucosal lining of the gastric and the intestinal tract, and hence help in digestion. Triphala is prescribed to people having constipation problems. By regular use of Triphala for a few days, the toxins within the intestinal tract are flushed out. Triphala is also prescribed for tonifying (i.e. regulating) the functioning of the stomach and the colon. Triphala is prescribed as an essential medicine for the elderly who are prone to have more digestive problems than the younger people. This is mainly because Triphala is a non-habit forming drug, and it has no known side-effects even after prolonged use. (ii) Flatulence Triphala is prescribed to people who have excess acidity in their stomachs. A regular use of the Triphala helps to dissolve all the toxic acids in the stomach. This helps in the treatment of flatulence. (iii) Gout Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, Triphala is used in the treatment of gout and other joint problems. Gout is formed when excess uric acid deposits in the joints of the bones. This is removed by Triphala, which gets it expelled through urination. Therefore, the conditions of gout are brought to a minimum. (iv) Liver Disorders Triphala helps in the proper functioning of the liver and the pancreas. It regulates the bile duct and treats sluggishness of the liver. Triphala is a support to the liver in performing most of its physiological functions. It is a common medicine prescribed to patients of hepatitis. (v) Nervous Disorders Triphala is prescribed in nervous problems like the Alzheimers due to its cooling and toning properties. It can repair the degenerated nerves and bring the nervous system back to a normal state of functioning. (vi) Obesity Amalaki is especially known to disintegrate the fatty accumulation in the body. Thus, Triphala can reduce the excess weight in obese people. In addition, regular use of the Triphala can also heal several of the complications of obesity. Since Triphala can dissolve the serum cholesterol, it decreases the chances of cardiovascular problems. The acrid and bitter components of Triphala are also good in the treatment and control of diabetes mellitus, to which obese people are much prone. (vii) Ocular Problems Triphala has beneficial effects in the treatment of eye infections like conjunctivitis and visual problems like cataract and glaucoma. On a lighter note, Triphala is prescribed to treat eye problems such as fatigue, redness and soreness of the eyes. It is used as eyewash in these cases. Precautions Triphala does not have any major side-effects. But it must be avoided by pregnant woman. People having complaints of diarrhea and dysentery must also restrict the use of Triphala. Is World’s End Near?

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Lynn Bradley The recent calamities have caused many to wonder if they are signs of the worlds end. Mother nature has been on a rampage lately. The 2004 tsunami in the Indian ocean was estimated to kill 170 to 275 thousand. Hurricanes destroyed New Orleans and other cities on the gulf coast and there was record number of hurricanes in 2005. Tornadoes and heavy snow storms seem to be getting worse. Are all of these things signs the world is coming to an end? Many think they are. Prophecy buffs point to verses in the Bible that speak of signs of the end of days. It should be pointed out, however, that people have been predicting the end of the world for years. Days are picked that they claim will be the end. None have proved true so far. The Bible does state the end is coming, and we have been living in what is called the last days since the times of the New Testament. Jesus said that only his Father knows the time he will return to take believers to heaven (MT 24:36). Most of the signs given in this chapter are about the destruction of Jerusalem in A. D. 70. The Christians remembered them and fled to the mountains when they saw the armies coming. As far as we know, none were lost. In the verses following in chapter 24, Jesus says that when he comes it will be like it was in the days of Noah. People will be eating and drinking and getting married. In Noahs days they didnt know what was happening until the flood came. They didnt believe Noah when he warned them, because they had never seen it rain. Up to this time streams came up from the ground to water the earth(GE 2:6). HE WILL COME WHEN HE IS NOT EXPECTED (MT 24:44). IT WILL NOT BE ANNOUNCED THAT THE LORD IS COMING! First Thessalonians 5:2 and Second Peter 3:10 both plainly state that JESUS WILL COME LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT. A thief does not give signs that he is coming and neither will our Lord! The recent calamities do not necessarily mean the worlds end is near. We cant rule it out either. We dont have any way of knowing when it will be. We have to keep watch as Jesus told us. It is not any thing to worry about if you are living according to Biblical instructions. It is a time to help others to know and obey the gospel so they will be ready. The Bible wasnt written to tell the future but to instruct how to live holy lives. We are to live by faith and not by sight. Second Peter 1:20 explains that no prophecy is of any private interpretation. The prophets didnt understand what they were speaking and neither can we. When New Testament verses point out they are fulfilling something predicated in the Old Testament, we know what they mean. This is the only way we can know for sure what they are about. We are told about death, and the judgement, but the times are not given. Weather comes in cycles. We have mild winters and summers and we have severe ones. Global warming may be true and it may be imagination. Our God has always taken care of this world and he will continue until he is ready to put a stop to it. Global warming will not end the world unless the Creator chooses this method to destroy it. The end will not come one minute sooner than he intends. We can be sure of that! The Lord designed and built it, and is capable of maintaining it. Permission is granted to publish this article if the resource box is left intact. Some Truthful Hoodia Gordonii Weight Loss Information

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Taff Martin Hoodia Gordonii is a plant that very closely resembles a cactus. For thousands of years, this succulent has been steadily growing in the arid Kalahari Desert. Recently in 2004 Hoodia Gordonii has become a superstar by virtue of its natural appetite suppressing properties. In a world whose waistline is continually expanding, Hoodia Gordonii rates Prime Time. The San tribe of the Kalahari have long understood the properties of Hoodia Gordonii where the internal stem is chewed to fend off hunger during their prolonged hunting trips. The active ingredient in Hoodia Gordonii is a molecule known as P57 was patented in 1996 and became the focus of study by the South African CSIR. (Council for Scientific and Industrial Affairs). P57 tricks the brain into believing that our glucose, (blood sugar), levels are high indicating that we must be full. The giant pharmaceutical corporation Pfizer worked together with a UK company, PhytoPharm, to try and produce an appetite suppressing compound from the active ingredients in Hoodia Gordonii. Research was stopped during 2002 due to difficulties in removing chemicals found in P57 that are harmful to our liver. For this reason the drug would not be approved by the US FDA. There are no scientific studies or trials that have conclusively shown that Hoodia Gordonii works as an appetite suppressor or is effective in producing weight loss. One study took seven overweight patients who managed to shed an average of 3.3% of their bodyweight during the trial. Lack of scientific evidence has not stopped dietary supplement companies from marketing their products as containing Hoodia Gordonii. Trimspa stated that their Hoodia Gordonii weight loss products will not only suppress appetite but also lowers blood pressure. The FDA has advised that these claims are not supported by any scientific evidence. The Trimspa brand is the subject of a lawsuit in California over claims that the brand does not actually contain any Hoodia Gordonii ingredients. The biggest loser in the Hoodia Gordonii weight loss proceedings has been the San people of the Kalahari. PhytoPharm sold the P57 patent to Pfizer in a multi million dollar deal but the San were totally excluded from any remuneration. A quote during the whole debacle was from PhytoPharm’s CEO who said “I honestly believed that these Bushmen had died out and am sorry to hear that they feel hard done by.”. This was the start of a lawsuit by the San for compensation from the giant pharmaceuticals. The San put forward a statement through a prominent lawyer they had engaged that they were not averse to assisting the Western World in developing medical treatments using their knowledge but they were not going to be the product of “Bio Piracy” for the sake of weight loss products and sit back and do nothing. At this time so as to avoid embarrassment the CSIR worked out a deal with the San which entitled the San to a percentage of the profits from the marketing of Hoodia Gordonii. The upshot of all this is that the Hoodia Gordonii plant is a protected plant. It may only be harvested from the Kalahari by people who live there. A very small number of companies have been granted a license for harvesting. In closing it must be said that Hoodia Gordonii has been independently tested by world class reporters, such as Lesley Stahl from 60 Minutes and Tom Mangold of the BBC who both visited the Kalahari to check out the claims. Both reported that after chewing Hoodia Gordonii they did not feel hungry. As we all know the the media giants would jump all over what they perceived to be false information. How To Win Back The Heart Of Your Husband In 3 Easy Steps

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Beth Young “When we were dating and newly married, I KNEW that I had 100% of my husbands heart and thoughts. Now I feel like I’m only an afterthought in his day.” Unfortunately, many women can empathize with the thoughts of this wife. Read about the steps that can be taken to win back the heart of your husband. Step #1 - It’s All About ‘Me’… Take a look at the things you can do to bring more peace and happiness to your life. Are you taking DAILY ‘me time’ where you focus on uplifting and inspirational things? As you strengthen things internal to your nature, an inner peace will surround you that will bring joy and happiness to you and those around you. Would your prefer to spend your time with someone who is always miserable or unhappy, or with someone who is happy and doing interesting and fun things to enjoy life? Enthusiasm and a sense of fun are powerful aphrodisiacs that attract others like a magnet. When you’re living a full life with both peaceful and adventurous activities, your spouse will want to spend more time with you. There is nothing more desirable than a woman who is happy, at peace and having fun. Step #2 - If You Love Them…Show Them Look for ways to make your partners life easier and to show your love. Collecting Things Made Of Celluloid

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Glyn Farber Celluloid is generally regarded as the first modern plastic. It was introduced in 1871 by the Celluloid Manufacturing Company of Albany, NY. The use of celluloid began with the manufacturing of billiard balls and was intended as a replacement for ivory. However, by the late 1800s it was used for all sorts of products from billiard balls to bobbin lace prickers, bracelets, button hooks, buttons, cameo brooches, cameo earrings, charm bracelets, dolls, folding toothpicks, fountain pen bodies, guitar picks, hair combs, hand mirrors, hat pins, knife handles, letter openers, match safes, mechanical pencils, money clips, necklaces, paperweights, pin-packs, pocket mirrors, ring boxes, rulers, shoehorns, stick pins, tatting shuttles, thimbles, toys, vanity boxes and many other items. The celluloid products mentioned above were made between the late 1800s and 1940s. Buttons were made by the millions for use on clothing and jewelry such as brooches, earrings, bracelets and necklaces also saw wide spread use. Vintage fountain pen bodies made of celluloid are a very popular collectible today. Some of these products were advertising giveaways distributed by every kind of business all across the United States. The most popular advertising celluloid giveaways were pin-backs and pocket mirrors. The principal producers of advertising celluloid pin-back buttons were the Whitehead and Hoag Company of Newark, NJ, American Artworks of Cochocton, OH, The St. Louis Button Company and Bastian Brothers of Rochester, NY. This same group of manufacturers, along with two others in Chicago, the Partisian Novelty Company and the Cruver Manufacturing Company, used celluloid for the backs of advertising pocket mirrors. Celluloid was not the best of all materials to use for the prized collectibles, as it was very flammable. Table Tennis balls are the only products known to use celluloid today. The best place to find vintage celluloid products and advertising celluloid products is eBay. 10 Career Change Myths

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Stacey Lane If you dream about having a different career, but don’t act on that dream, you may be operating under the assumption of a career myth. In this article, I expose 10 myths, sayings you’ve heard before that simply are not true. Let’s explore them. Career Myth #1: You can’t make a living doing something you really, truly love This is the grand-daddy of career myths, the belief that you can’t have a “practical” career doing something that you were passionate about. It has to be one or the other. This myth is rooted in fear. Fear that we have to sacrifice our happiness to make a living. Don’t buy the myth that you can’t earn a living by doing what you love. When I first started coaching, I heard from plenty of people that it would be very difficult to make a living doing this work. I just decided to find coaches who were successful, and to learn from them (simple, eh?). If you find yourself buying into this myth, consider this question - As you look back on your life, what will you regret more? Following your passion or following your fears? Career Myth #2: It’s a tough job market/economy Even when the newspapers and other news sources say that unemployment numbers remain steady, that job growth is at a standstill, or that we’re experiencing slow economic recovery, not to mention downsizing and outsourcing, don’t believe it. It’s a myth because it doesn’t reflect the whole story, the fact that that it’s a different job market today. It’s a changing economy. How we transition from job-to-job is different. Hiring practices have shifted. So the job market has changed, but that doesn’t necessarily make it tougher. What makes it tougher is that we’ve been slower to change. We’ve held on to old practices and old behaviors. That’s not to say that old ways still don’t work, but they’re just not as effective. So I challenge you to just believe that it’s a perfect job market for you to find work. I’ve had my college students try this, just for a week, and, more times than not, several of them find job leads or make important connections during the week. Career Myth #3: Changing careers is risky What’s riskier than leaving what you know to pursue the unknown? Changing careers means leaving behind a piece of your identity - your “I’m a lawyer” response to the “what-do-you-do?” question. It might mean admitting to yourself that you made a mistake with an initial career choice. Or it might mean acknowledging that you’re unsure of what’s next. And smart people always know what’s next, right? Nope. Successful career changers often don’t have a plan. In Working Identity: How Successful Career Changers Turn Fantasy into Reality by Herminia Ibarra, she provided evidence that waiting until you have a plan is actually riskier than just doing and experimenting. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is riskier than not changing careers if you’re longing to do so. Here’s why: The longing won’t go away. It will always be there, under the surface, waiting for you to do something about it. Career Myth #4: Always have a back-up plan Sometimes having a back-up plan is the smart and prudent course of action. Back-up plans are so grown-up and responsible. But what happens when you’re standing with one foot in and one foot out? In my experience, we usually close the door and retreat. We are reluctant to commit to ourselves, and we end up denying ourselves the satisfaction of playing full-out, getting dirty and sweaty. We end up with feelings of regret and the nagging “What if?” question. Back-up plans diffuse our energy. Diffused energy equals diffused results. Give all that you’ve got to your dream/passion/risk and you’ve got a better chance of being successful. Career Myth #5: There’s a perfect job out there for everyone How long have you been searching for yours? You just know, deep inside, that there’s an ideal job that’s perfect for you out there. It matches your personality, skills, and interests to a tee. And it pays well. If only you could figure it out. If only you knew what it was. Is there a perfect job out there for you? No. And here’s the good news - there are more jobs than you can imagine that would be “perfect” for you. Chances are you’ve even come very, very close to a few of those perfect jobs already. So what happened? And how do you recognize one of these so-called “perfect jobs”? Ever see the perfect gift for someone, but it was months till his or her birthday? Then when you go to find the item later, you can’t. Another lost opportunity and you, once again, berate yourself for not buying it when you first saw it. So maybe you’ve run into a perfect job in the past, but because of the timing, you passed by the opportunity. Or maybe you were so focused on something else, that you missed an obvious clue. Instead of dwelling on the past, which you can’t change, vow to keep your eyes open and to look beyond the obvious. Career Myth #6: Asking “What’s the best thing for me to do?” is the right question This is one of the most common questions asked when considering a career change or a career move. It seems like a logical analysis - weigh the pros and cons and evaluate the balance. Do not ask yourself this question!! It rarely leads you to the answers you’re seeking. It will lead you to feeling overwhelmed with options (sound familiar?), or feeling like you have to choose what’s practical over what seems to be impractical. The question that will lead you to answers is simple (but not easy!!) It is “What do I really want to do?” This is a very different question than “what’s best?” Career Myth #7: If you don’t like your job, you’re probably in the wrong career Cause and effect, right? One way to tell if you’re in the right career is whether or not you like your job. If you’re dissatisfied with your job, it’s probably a sign that you need to re-examine your whole career choice. This is frequently what I hear from new clients who have decided to work with a career coach. They know something isn’t right because they don’t like their jobs. Their natural assumption is that their dissatisfaction is a symptom of a larger underlying issue - their career choice. This is an example of false logic. Not liking your job might be telling you you’re in the wrong job. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in the wrong career. It doesn’t even mean you’re in the wrong job. You could just be working for the wrong person or the wrong company. It takes a skillful approach to discern the source of discontent, and I think it’s very hard to do it on your own (shameless plug for career coaches here!) Career Myth #8: Everyone needs a mission statement Do you know what your mission is? Mission statements are supposed to guide us, keep us on track, and help us move forward. But what if you don’t have one? Does that mean you’re destined to never fulfill your potential career-wise? A client who was a successful professional contacted me because she was at a career crossroads. She felt that if only she could find her mission in life, she would know which career path to take. She had a clear goal for coaching - find her mission! Instead, the most amazing thing happened. She decided that she didn’t need a mission. She chose to trust that she was already fulfilling her mission statement, even though she didn’t know what it was. After the client shifted her focus from finding her mission to living her life, an amazing opportunity came her way and she pursued it. Here’s a little tip: If your mission statement is elusive, stop chasing it. Be still and let it find you. And in the meantime, keep living your life and see what happens. Career Myth #9: Expect a career epiphany When you see a link to “Find Your Dream Job,” do you immediately click on it to see what’s there? Do you look at every “Top Ten Career” list out there to see if anything catches your interest? Do you know your MBTI type? If you do, you might be falling prey to the career epiphany myth. I’d love, love, love it if most of my clients had a career epiphany that indicated to them, in crystal-clear terms, their next step. Instead, I see career “unfoldings” or a journey of discovery much more regularly. That is, being willing to not ignore the obvious, the pokes, the prods, and listen carefully to the whisper within. Yep, forget harp music and angels, for most of us, the career epiphany is a quiet whisper. Career Myth #10: Ignoring your career dissatisfaction will make it go away Oh, if only this worked in the long run!! Granted, it does work at first. When you find yourself beginning to question your career, you’ll find it’s rather easy to push the thoughts aside and pretend they aren’t there. You know what I’m talking about: the “what ifs” and the list of regrets. Over time, the random thoughts become nagging thoughts. You spend more and more time daydreaming about options. You build your list of reasons to ignore your growing career dissatisfaction: You’re too old.You don’t want to take a pay cut. You don’t want to go back to school. You missed your opportunity 5, 10, 15 years ago. With clients in this situation, we work on identifying and challenging these fears. Sometimes the fear of change remains, but there becomes a greater commitment to living than to feeling the fear. Challenge So now that you know that one or all of these myths have been holding you back, what are you waiting for? Do Garden Statues Have a Place in a Modern Garden?

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Roy Thomsitt The great classic gardens of the past almost always featured garden statues as focal points in their designs. These would often be on a grand scale, with larger than life portrayals of men, women, birds and beasts. They would be used to attract the eye down particular vistas, to add height and interest to a flat area, or to provide a foil for water gardens or ponds. Can those classic traditions be transported to ordinary householders’ garden? The answer to that is yes, although it is usually in a miniature form. A small garden cannot reasonably display a 20 ft stone statue, but can attractively display the same design at one tenth of the height. Garden statues have therefore become very popular for the modern garden and gardener. Materials Used in Garden Statues Garden statues have traditonally been carved from natural stone, but similar and often cheaper results are now commonly achieved through the use of concrete moulds. Apart from concrete and stone, though, some may prefer the shiny Asian garden decor created from bronze. However, that is not all that is available. Marble is a type of stone, but deserves separate mention due to its superior and luxurious lustre; you can also find garden statues in fibreglass and metals other than bronze. Concrete statues, although tough, can still get damaged, and concrete aggregates such as fibrestone are now regularly used in the production of garden statues from concrete moulds. Fibrestone, for example, is concrete reinforced with a fine but very strong mesh, which gives extra strength and durability. This is ideal for high quality, long lasting statues, and can even be used effectively for large, classic style statues for the larger country garden. Also, being lighter than concrete on its own, fibrestone is easier to transport and move around the garden should the need arise. As with many product, you can go to the bottom end of the market and choose plastic statues. These may fulfill your immediate needs, but if you are seeking to reproduce a classic garden of old, you will probably prefer sticking to stone, concrete or concrete aggregates. It is well worth the extra expense both for statues and outdoor planters. Subjects for Garden Statues There has always been a wide choice of subjects for garden statues. Many are of classic origin, such as cherubs, angels, Appollo, Venus, Sphynx and many more religious and mythical icons. In recent times, though, animals have become a popular choice of subject for garden statues, and you may find the majority of the statues you see today are of animals. Statues of lions and unicorns go back many centuries, but today most popular animals can be found as garden statues. Cat and dog statues are easy to find, but you can also find frogs and toads, squirrels and other animals. Planning Statue Placement The best time to consider where to place garden statues is when you are planning your garden design and layout, but that is not a necessity and may not be practical anyway. The great country gardens of the past, and today, used large statues as focal points in vistas, or in prominent positions, where they can freely impose their stature without detracting from the rest of garden. Smaller statues can be very effective in small gardens, but to get maximum effect, as with large gardens, it is worth spending a bit of time considering their surrounds so they blend in seamlessly with the garden design. Just buying a statue while you are out because it catches your eye may lead to disappointment when you get it back home and find it looks out of place in your agrden wherever you put it.
