History of Wedding Favors

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Natalie Aranda When planning a wedding be sure to give special attention to the wedding favors. Wedding favors are given to guests as a thank you to friends and family for sharing in your special day. Do you know what one thing is a favorite for not only wedding favor ideas but wedding gift ideas too? Candy! If you don’t know the couple very well or are just at a loss as to what to give them, a gourmet box of chocolate candy is sure to please. To add a keepsake value to the candy wedding favor, many brides to be choose decorative boxes or baskets to hold the candy that guests can display and use in their homes to remember the day for years to come. The boxes and baskets can be decorated with the colors and theme of the wedding, and personalized to include the couple’s names, initials or help to tell the story of their lives and achievements with their design. The favor boxes and baskets are then filled with chocolate candy of all types. Chocolate kisses can be found wrapped in many different colors of foil, or you can have them specialty wrapped to color coordinate with the wedding. Chocolate truffles, chocolate dipped pretzels, and chocolate-coated nuts are among the favorites to include. For variety, add some bite size versions of the all time favorite candy bar, hard candy in a variety of flavors and colors and don’t forget the candy cane. Candy canes now come in gourmet flavors and colors and with a bow tied around them make a nice addition to the mix. A candy cane with card attached to the bow can also serve dual function as a placeholder and an after dinner mint. Everyone loves candy and will find something in the box that makes their mouth water. The key to a great candy favor box is variety and of course the container. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. Boxes can be paper, wooden, glass or crystal. The candy assortment can be wrapped in colored foil, tissue paper, any style of transparent gift-wrap or small fabric bags. Confetti placed inside adds a fun & festive touch and a pretty bow tied around it another. This type of candy favor can also be tied around a larger favor such as a candle or bath salts. Baskets are very versatile and used later by the guests to hold keys, jewelry, and other small itemsaround their home. When picking your wedding gift ideas, whatever your decision, be sure to include some candy. Chocolate candy, hard candy, the candy bar and candy cane bring out the child in all of us. And who knows better how to laugh, have fun and enjoy a special day better than children? Natalie Aranda writes about family, love and weddings. Yoga For Weight Loss - Losing Weight With Yoga

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Julia Denham You’re many pounds overweight, and you’d love to try yoga… will yoga help you to lose weight? The main benefit of yoga is that anyone can do it: young, old, fit, or completely out of shape, so do try yoga - with your doctor’s permission, of course. Indeed, many yoga studios now provide classes with specially modified exercises for people who want to lose weight. Since hatha yoga isn’t strenuous, you’re not going to burn lots of calories with yoga, but what you will do is get back in touch with your body. Yoga Puts You Back In Touch With Your Body After a few sessions of yoga, many people find that their cravings for fatty and other “unhealthy” types of food go away, and they find themselves eating less, and wanting to eat more fruits and vegetables. This happens completely naturally, your diet will change of its own accord. Yoga has a normalizing effect on all the systems of your body. Your digestion will improve, and you may find that small niggling heath worries like a sore back, or sinusitis, clear up of their accord. You’ll also find that you will sleep better, and that you want to move more. Yoga Eases Stress, Eliminating Comfort Eating Yoga is particularly useful if you’re a comfort eater - someone who eats whenever they’re stressed. Your yoga exercises help you to calm down. This isn’t something that you will notice immediately, but over time you’ll find that you no longer react as you once did. You’ll get rid of your stashes of chocolate bars, because you no longer need them. So if you’ve been considering yoga, sign up for some classes. You’ll be amazed at the changes which yoga will bring into your life. You can lose weight and feel great with with yoga, a gentle form of exercise. Yoga strengthens both your body and mind, and is suitable for anyone, from children to seniors. Mystery, not Myth: Jesus Christ is real!

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

By Steve Singleton In the children’s section of any bookstore, books on the birth of Jesus stand next to Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk. The same parents who describe Santa Claus so convincingly also tell their children of Another who knows if they’ve been “naughty or nice.” No wonder many children cast aside the Father and the Son at about the time they give up their belief inthe Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny. But the Gospel Story is not myth or fairy tale. It is history–as solidly believable as Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus. Look at any calendar. The prefixes Sept-, Oct-, Nov-, and Dec- should designate months 7, 8, 9, and 10, not 9, 10, 11, and 12. Why are they off by two digits? Because in their egotism two powerful men, namely Julius Caesar and Caesar Augustus, inserted months to honor themselves, pushing the succeeding months back in the year. The calendar’s misnamed months testify to the two rulers historicity. The same is true with regard to the year on the calendar. Each passing year recalls the blessed moment when “The Word became flesh and pitched a tent among us” (John 1:14). And every stock market report and checkbook entry, every video camera’s electronic brain and every letter’s postmark, whisper inunison, He actually lived, truly and literally, in real space and time!” John cannot be misunderstood: “We heard Him, we saw Him with our eyes, we looked at Him, and our hands touched Him” (1 John 1:1). Paul says Christ was raised and appeared to eyewitnesses, many of whom were still alive to affirm it 25 years later (1 Cor. 15:5-8). For all of us who follow Him, the story can end, “and they lived happily ever after,” because of this very reason: it does not begin with “Once upon a time,” but “Once, for all time.” * * * Copyright 2006 Steve Singleton Steve Singleton has written and edited several books and numerous articles. Key Marketing Strategy - You Need To Stay Visible!

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Kevin P. Dervin If you want to get consistent results from your marketing, you need to stay visible to clients and prospects. But, how do you do that? It’s not going to do you a whole lot of good if you produce a bunch of great marketing stuff and nobody ever reads it. And, it’s pretty hard to keep the ball rolling if someone hears about you once and then you disappear after that. Lots of people are “out there” getting that all important first visibility through networking, doing presentations, handing out business cards, and even getting a visit to the web site. But too often, there’s no way to maintain the contact. Call It A Need To Be Loved. You see, for my business, I don’t want my clients and prospects to forget me. When they have a marketing issue to be addressed, I hope they think of me first. When someone in their network of contacts has a marketing challenge, I hope they think of me first again. The best way I’ve found to maintain this kind of visibility is with a “stay in-touch” strategy. A stay in-touch strategy is designed to keep you top of mind with clients and potential prospects. Keep in touch with your clients and prospects over time, and you’ll build more mutually beneficial relationships. And, the key to making this work - ignored by virtually all small businesses - is to focus on providing information of value. Simply calling every four to six weeks just to “check in” and “see how things are going” won’t get it done. Yes, you’ll stay visible, but you might just be a visible pest. It’s Easier Than You Think. The good news is that this strategy can be a whole lot easier than you think. Let me tell you why I believe this to be so. In the fall of 2004, I was given the opportunity to submit some articles to an incredible resource called eZine Articles.com. I went ahead and submitted nine things I had already written that I thought would make good content for the web site’s purpose. But to be honest, I sort of submitted them and forgot about it. Then about two and half weeks later, I received an email from a career, business and life coach in Ohio (I’m in Kansas City). She had picked up one of my articles and created a link for it on her web site. She also asked me to take a look at her submitted articles and consider reciprocating. So that’s what I did. Bingo, instant article that I believe provides subscribers to my own eZine some valuable information to put to use in their businesses. What’s My Point? If you’ve been thinking about starting a newsletter, or an eZine, or would like to have valuable articles to share with clients and prospects in order to stay visible - you can get started today! You don’t necessarily have to be the creator of all that valuable information to stay top of mind with your clients, prospects, referral sources, and alliance partners. You can start to generate that continued visibility you desire by becoming “the provider of information.” (c) - Kevin Dervin, KPD Marketing About the Author: Kevin Dervin is focused on helping small businesses that are ready to grow, but struggle with how to consistently attract more clients. My Unique Wedding - Make Your Day Special

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Tonia Jordan When I got married, I most remember how much fun it was. My husband and I had been engaged forever and I was starting to think wed never actually tie the knot. It wasnt cold feet it was a difference of religious background. It wasnt that we couldnt agree on which church to get married in, but it was that our families couldnt agree. Then in the late summer of 2002, a friend of ours got married and the manner in which he got married solved our problems. His fried was ordained through the Universal Life Church, making him legally able to marry couples who wished to be married. At the end of August, we decided to get married on Halloween, just two months away! We attempted to contact a few local halls to rent a space to have the ceremony, but as you can imagine, everything was already booked for that date. We ended up having the ceremony in the living room of our apartment. We had never wanted to make a huge deal out of our wedding, with a grand, traditional ceremony. Instead, we invited family and friends to our Halloween Costume Ball/Wedding. As the bride, I wore beautiful white angel wings and a white Princess-style gown. My groom wore bat wings with his outfit. We encouraged our guests to dress up, and they had fun deciding on what to wear to our wedding. Our friend/minister even dressed in costume, as Elvis! We wrote our vows together just a few minutes before the ceremony, which we both felt was very romantic, as we were caught up in the spirit and excitement of our special day. The most difficult part of the day proved to be fitting all of our family and friends into one small room! We didnt need to hire a band, as we used our own collection of music to entertain everyone. We didnt need a caterer, either, for the very informal reception. Our day was special and memorable without months and months of planning. By taking the focus off of extensive planning and expensive frills, we focused more on what the day meant to us. Not to say that having an extravagant, traditional wedding doesnt have its merits, but our Halloween wedding was just perfect for us. The most important thing for us was to make our special day fun for everyone involved, including us. It was not a particularly stressful event for us and we did everything our own way. It was absolutely a memorable event for everyone who was there, and I know well all remember it fondly. Upside Down - Perfect for Your Tomatoes

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By J Ruppel You may have seen upside down tomato gardens and planters advertised, or you may have thought of building an upside down planter of your own. But what are the advantages of these upside down planters, and what are the options for buying or making one? Upside Down Tomato Planter - Make or Buy There are a couple of commercially available planters. Some are for just a single plant, while others handle several plants. They are advertised heavily to be used for tomatoes, but they can also be used to grow smaller bush plants like peppers and maybe even eggplants. Many herbs will grow well in these planters. There is a smaller type of planter (for example the Topsy Turvy planter) that your can find for under $20. It will usually hold one plant (you can sometimes put a second one on the top), and will need someplace to hang. Another type is the larger self supporting units like the Upside Down Tomato Garden. This garden unit stands about 5 feet tall and is designed to hold several tomato plants, and herbs or flowers on the top. An ideal fit for an apartment balcony or patio, it will also serve well as a nice little garden space you can put close to your kitchen on a deck. You should be aware that fully loaded with soil they can weigh quite a bit, so consider ahead of time just where you want to put it. The larger upside down tomato garden can hold 80 pounds of dirt, so you don’t want to be moving it after it’s loaded. You can build an upside down planter yourself. A simple plastic bucket could be used for the planter with a hole in the bottom of a few inches in diameter. You can hang it from a hook on the house, or build a simple sawhorse bracket. Pros of Using an Upside Down Tomato Planter With the tomatoes hanging in the air they can ripen without rot. You have fewer problems with pests like snails and ants. Make sure to keep the planter soil moist, as all container grown plants tend to dry out fairly quickly in hot weather. An upside down tomato garden is perfect for your apartment on a balcony or a patio, or put one on a patio or deck for those just looking to move part of the garden closer to the kitchen. How Your Metabolism Influences Weight Control

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Yuri Elkaim First off, Let’s start with some basic terms: Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR): the minimum number of calories your body’s vital organs need just to survive at rest. This accounts for 60-75% of your daily caloric expenditure. RMR varies from person to person and is influenced by such variables as lean body mass, height, weight, sex, age, diet, and stress. Activity: Whether it be at work, walking to and from the store, or engaging in physical activity this type of work accounts for 20-30% of your daily caloric expenditure. Digestion: Ironically, each time you eat food you actually burn calories. This type of expenditure accounts for 5-10% of your daily calorie output. Step 1: Exercise raises your metabolism and therefore helps control your weight Considering that your RMR accounts for up to 75% of your daily caloric expenditure wouldn’t it make sense to do things that will increase your RMR? Aerobic activity and strength training increase the energy demand on your body. This release of energy is referred to as “burning calories”. Strength training builds lean muscle that in turn burns up to 50x more calories than fat. This is the key to long lasting weight control! Therefore, the more lean muscle mass you have, the higher your RMR becomes which in turn burns more calories, even while sitting on the couch. I like to refer to this as “passive energy expenditure” meaning that you don’t need to do anything and yet you’re still burning calories. Wouldn’t that be great? Simply put in a bit of hard work up front and then reap the benefit in the long run! Step 2: Eating more often in smaller amounts helps increase your metabolism As previously mentioned, every time you eat your body expends energy to digest and absorb what it has just ingested. This is known as the “thermogenic effect of food”. Therefore, wouldn’t make sense to eat more often knowing that each time you ate you would actually be burning calories. Typically, it is recommended to eat anywhere from 4-6 small meals throughout the day or 3 larger meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) with small snacks in between. However, please remember that we’re talking about smaller meals that are healthy, well-balanced, and lower on the glycemic index. Not a burger and fries! So, here are 2 simple steps you can take immediately to help control your weight. We’re not talking magic pill but if you’re consistent with daily activity and eating frequent small meals you’ll see dramatic results in a just few weeks! Carpet Cleaning Tips to Try Before Calling the Professional Carpet Cleaner

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Jonni Good Most of us cant afford to call a professional carpet cleaner every time company is expected. When that spot just has to come out, the following tips might help. Remember to try these ideas on a hidden spot to make sure they dont cause permanent damage! Be especially careful with any solution containing ammonia, which should never be used on a wool carpet. Vinegar can affect dark colors, so always test. For oily spots: Try mixing one tablespoon of mild detergent, one-third cup of white vinegar (not apple cider or fancy salad dressing vinegar), and two-thirds cup of water. Gently blot the stain with a clean towel dipped in the solution. Next, lay several layers of paper towels on the wet spot and press down to dry the carpet as much as possible. Then blot with plain water to remove the solution, and dry with paper towels a second time. Another trick that may work on grease is to spread foaming shaving cream over the stain. Gently work it into the carpet, allow it to dry, and then vacuum the spot. If the grease stain is brand new, try pouring baking soda over the area and rub it in. Give the baking soda about an hour to soak up the grease, and then vacuum. For protein spots, such as blood, eggs, or milk: Mix one cup of water, two tablespoons of ammonia and one tablespoon of mild detergent. Blot and dry as recommended above. Protein spots are incredibly difficult to get out of carpets, so you may prefer to call in professional help. For mystery spots: Use one cup of warm water with a small squirt (about a quarter teaspoon) of dishwashing soap. Any detergent or soap used on carpets should contain no bleach, and should be rinsed out of the carpet to avoid re-staining. Red wine: Use these tips with a lot of caution! You can sometimes remove red wine stains if you catch them quickly enough. Before the red wine has dried, pour white wine on the spot. This may stop the red wine from causing a permanent stain, but its also possible that it will simply make the stain bigger. Another option for new red wine spills on carpet is to cover the area with salt to soak up the red wine, remove as much of the salt as possible, and then blot with club soda. Always rinse with clean water and blot dry with clean white paper towels. Coffee stains: Blot the stain with a solution made from a half teaspoon of mild detergent mixed in two cups of clean water. If that doesnt work, mix up a batch of cup of water and cup of white vinegar. If in doubt, always call in a professional carpet cleaner. Fighting Depression by Restoring Your Routines

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By Allan Cowley When we have depression, one of the things we drop from our lives is a routine. Most humans need routine as it adds structure to our lives. During bouts of depression we find it hard to go about our daily lives with a sense of purpose and direction. Restoring your routines will help to counteract this problem. Even the simplest things can appear to be beyond us and therefore get put aside. When this happens, we are in fact, only moving further away from a “normal” life. To reclaim a normal life, return to doing normal things. A major effect of depression is a feeling of losing control over ones life. We start to feel that everything is happening “to us” rather than through the choices we are able to make. By reinstating your routines you can begin to regain more control. Start by writing a list of the day-to-day activities that you may no longer participate in. I include a few simple suggestions below and possible remedial action you might take for each. 1) Brushing your teeth. Clean your teeth twice a day and use a mouthwash. There ARE going to be times when you smile, so make sure you are prepared! Even if the smile is accidental, there is no point in having a piece of lettuce between your teeth. 2) Remain well groomed. For men this would include having a shave every day, for women, putting on make-up (I know of some men and women who need both!). Trim your fingernails. 3) Personal cleanliness. Have a shower every day and use a deodorant, after-shave, cologne or perfume. 4) Clean clothes. Put on fresh clothes every day. Make sure your clothes are ironed; even if someone else usually irons on your behalf, taking charge of your own ironing will help in your recovery. 5) Eat sensibly. A loss of ones appetite, especially for sensible foods, is very common. Make the effort to eat as much fresh fruit, vegetables, fibre and nutrients as possible. If you find that your stomach is in a knot and the thought of eating fills you with dread, try taking these things in the form of a drink. Use a food blender, juice extractor or similar. There is a wide variety of these machines on the market. Adding an appropriate multi-vitamin supplement to your daily diet can also help. Don’t be afraid to allow yourself a food treat now and again, just be careful not to overdo it. “A little of what you fancy does you good”, with the emphasis on “little”. 6) Get out as often as you can. Even if, at times, all you think you can manage is going out into the garden, then you are, at least, getting some fresh air and a bit of sun on your face. Exercise is a great way to lift your spirits, so even going out to post a letter will help. 7) Keep in touch with family and friends. Losing touch with our loved ones leaves us feeling more isolated so make the effort to meet up with those people you care about and who care about you. Even if you feel that you can’t manage to see anyone face-to-face, phone them, write a letter or use email. If you don’t want discuss your life with people you know, you could consider the likes of internet forums as an outlet for expression. Talking to strangers is often easier. 8) Look after your personal environment. Housework not only improves the look of your surroundings but also provides good, low level exercise. 9) Don’t get bored. Do ANYTHING to fill in that gap. Do a crossword, read a book or magazine that you find interesting, polish the silver, polish your shoes, shave the cat. Just do SOMETHING. Make it an activity you have to concentrate on so that your thoughts are, at least temporarily, distracted from the depression. Even 5 minutes of concentrating on another subject is a welcome “holiday”. Now turn your list into an action plan. Take the points you have noted down and make a chart with all the various activities you have listed. Each day, tick off each step as you go. Not only will taking positive action improve the way you feel, but by showing to yourself that you ARE taking action to defeat the depression, you will give yourself a well deserved feeling of achievement.
